QoTD: Jeff Waugh

I was ready to walk out, because it sounded like the stupidest thing ever.” — Jeff Waugh on Ubuntu’s origins

It feels utterly silly to be citing myself in QoTD, but this hilariously out of context quote on the cover of Linux Format 87 couldn’t go without mention.
Read the complete interview, including bits not found in the magazine, […]

bzr gcommit

Brandon just pointed out a new jelmer gem, bzr gcommit along with associated Bazaar GTK+/GNOME integration stuff. Awesome!

Hu-la-la-la

Since Hula was first announced, the #1 question we’ve gotten has been, “will it work with my postfix/Maildir setup?”
Clearly, it is clueful and savvy users that are interested in Hula!
From what Dave showed us during his demo at the Boston Summit, Hula Lite will be a ball-breakingly, jaw-snappingly, lemur-impersonatingly worthy successor to existing, spotty FLOSS […]

Ohio LinuxFest 2006

Tomorrow, I’ll be giving the opening keynote at the Ohio LinuxFest! Then I’ll be listening to Jorge’s presentation about Linux and Windows living together in harmony. Sweet!

The organisers have packed a lot of great stuff and fantastic people into one day. Unfortunately, I land in Columbus after 21:00, so it’s unlikely that I’ll make it […]

Dell D420

Yesterday, the well-traveled and now-infamous Quebecistani Craptop — a temporary replacement for my wonderful Dell X300, stolen in Montreal — was laid to rest. At least until EuroOSCON, at which point it will be returned to Canonical.
Today, I replaced it with a Dell D420.

It’s 100% Intel: Core Duo, 900 series graphics, ipw3945 wifi, MediaBase with DVI socket, 12” widescreen […]

GNOME 2.16

GNOME — the software and the community — is the secret sauce behind recent barnstorming Linux desktop products such as SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 and Ubuntu 6.06 LTS. The project’s passionate developer community, “Just Works” approach and fierce focus on “Universal Access” — usability, internationalisation and accessibility — are making Open Source desktop technology compelling, desireable and commercially viable for both consumers […]

RftE: Python

After finding this gem through Matthias Clasen and Ryan Lortie, I realised that my Ready for the Enterprise series simply had to include negative reviews too: Things that are clearly not Ready for the Enterprise.
Apparently, Arjan van de Ven has declared war on context switches and process wakeups in Red Hat’s bugzilla. A bunch of […]

Awesome Reanimated

I was poking around for some spare hardware, and came upon an old machine I hadn’t used for a while. Turns out I hadn’t used it for quite a while indeed: /dev/hda1 has gone 1375 days without being checked, check forced.
Wow. I haven’t turned this on for several years. I’ve moved at least three or […]

Brand LIVE! Tourettes

In his Macworld 1997 keynote, Steve Jobs said that the two most important assets that Apple owned (because it did not own its customers) were the Apple brand and Mac OS. While it was still one of the most recognised brands in the world, “Apple” had been dragged through the metaphorical mud, and the brand […]
