It happens with FLOSS and copyright reform issues, and it happens all the time with mainstream reporting on subcultures in which I participate. "Hey, I read about these wacky people on the internet, and talked to one colourful loony, and now I'm an expert!" At least the Wikipedia articles about subcultures tend to be written by people with inside experience; something I gather is not always the case with e.g. theoretical physics. :/ Very true.
