With a bit of expert advice from The Internet’s Larry Ewing, Pia and I bought a Canon EOS 400D today. What a delightful piece of hardware! This photo of John Ferlito is the best of today’s bunch.
It’s going to take a while to get back into the swing of using a real camera, but luckily I have all of linux.conf.au during which I can experiment. Rock on!

Nice one! I’m using 300D for couple of years now. You can make really nice photos with them and it’s cheap (compared to other dSLRs).
I will be happy to be warned if you find a way to display/edit a Canon EOS 400D raw file under linux.
I have a friend who bought this jewel but have not found a linux software to process them.
Yeah - I have a 350D and I was playing with a 400D today. It’s a great piece of kit for the money.
Speaking of which, If there’s one thing I recommend you do - get a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lense.
It’s the cheapest lense that Canon make, and I wasn’t without it until I replaced it with the more expensive version. Excellent for indoor photography and portraits considering the price. I have the more expensive version (the f/1.4) on my camera about 80% of the time.
Enjoy taking photographs!
As a 350D (your camera’s daddy) owner I’d really appreciate it if when you come across a program that edits/processes the Canon Raw format (.cr2) under Linux you could post it to your blog.
F-Spot DISPLAYS the photos ok, when browsing through them, but that’s it, no editing or processing.
I have to keep XP around just to have the full functionality of my camera hardware, and that makes me sad.
Enjoy your new camera! They’re so much fun!
Jeff, enjoy. I’ve had a 350D for a couple of years and I’ve never regretted my choice. As Andrew says, I’d also recommend the 50mm f/1.8 - cheap, good and remarkably robust.
Simon, I think RawStudio will do what you want for the 350D. Unfortuntaely I’m currently using Lightroom on Windows instead, so I can’t comment in detail. I don’t know whether it supports the 400D format yet.
