So, it’s important for us to acknowledge that we’re prone to be conservative, and in turn surround ourselves with individuals who will help break down our conservatism.” — Shigeru Miyamoto, on designing the Wii controllers

Some people want to move forward, with the best ideas and the best people. I would say that is rare.

Unfortunately, most groups and companies are not like that. A company usually has an old guard with money and the people who are the best at complimenting their dull and customer-squeezing ideas.

They don’t have new ideas beyond decoration and packaging for old ideas. When they come out with a new version, it is usually b/c the old version was broken (like windows and security). Or the new version is released to charge users more for less (like DVDs and region coding).

Long-term copyrights and patents just reinforce the Laurel-sitting, and customer-screwing strategy. Companies should be forced to make new contributions to their fields if they want government protection for their work.
