Various bits of law WRT an .nz/.au merger have existed for a long time.
OTToMH .au’s contribution includes listing North Island as one state & South Island as another.
It’d answer conference location questions quickly: Q: is it in Australia? A: Yes, the skinny cold bit south-east of Sydney.
Also, we’d start getting decent ice-cream in the shops.
Speaking from NZ, when hell freezes over :). Seriously Aussies seem to be the only ppl who think this is a good idea…

Apparently, the NZ end of the deal was instigated by NZ pollies.
Somehow, we (AU) managed to avoid becoming “West Island” in the process. Mind you, there are still maps around showing WA as “largely unexplored”. (-:
