I’ve been through a few corporate mergers. Until the deal is completely final, two companies that have agreed to merge must continue to operate as seperate companies. They can’t share trade secrets, or agree on changes in policy.
So the ATI statements are meaningless. They are being acquired. Maybe AMD will decide to open up specs, or free some code. Maybe AMD won’t. But the statements from the ATI execs are a no-op.
The big assumption is that in the snippet of the quote that actually got published carries the intent. What was quoted represents a particular point that the author was hoping to get eyeballs with.
