It is not a new desktop environment, it is not a fully functional API unto itself. There is nothing to do, and ultimately no point "working on Portland rather than GNOME". Maybe I will seem like some party crasher, but why don’t take pictures of (even happier) KDE-users?

Dude, seriously — Portland, right now, is a bunch of shell scripts that wrap GNOME and KDE tools. It is not a new desktop environment, it is not a fully functional API unto itself. There is nothing to do, and ultimately no point “working on Portland rather than GNOME”.
