Ubuntu Blog Update

  • Andrew Sobala has a short’n'sweet review of Ubuntu, saying “GNOME is still the best desktop out there, and Ubuntu is its perfect dream.” Fellow GNOME developer Murray Cumming tried a few other options, “but Ubuntu won again”.
  • Les Ritchin installed Ubuntu on a Toshiba Tecra A2 for his friend’s grandmother (!) and it all Just Worked: “I would rate the Tecra A2′s Ubuntu Linux compatibility at 10/10.”
  • wara, a teacher at Grant High School (another South Australian school) writes about their success switching to Ubuntu for a computer recycling project: “[Ubuntu] is just the bees knees for a computer that will be used for basic office and student type tasks. It installs very very easily and comes with Open Office and Gimp already installed. Our learning curve suddenly seems manageable again.”
  • Stephen has some handy hints and links for anyone installing Ubuntu on an HP dv1000 series laptop. Another mobile Ubuntu user, titlecharacter, says, “the latest Ubuntu Linux has power management that works as well as Windows’, so I get my full 3 hours out of it no matter what OS I’m using”.
  • kmm is impressed with the new Ubuntu LiveCD on his PPC, while Jamin Philip Gray found Just Works love on his centrino… and decided to switch there and then!
  • Tom Hoffman, who heads up the SchoolTool project, points to an interview with Mark on LugRadio. Episode 20 features yours truly at an ungodly hour of the morning. Don’t miss LugRadio upstart Jono Bacon’s quick intro to GNOME programming with Python.
  • Luis Villa is working on a derivative of the Ubuntu LiveCD for GNOME marketing, and is looking for GNOME branded community artwork for it.
  • Eric Hutchins reckons “[those] Ubuntu guys are more in-tune with what’s needed for a successful implementation of linux-on-the-desktop than any other distro I know.” Sweet! Oh, and Eric, you can shake off the Windows habit with Sound Juicer for ripping OGGs and Nautilus for burning CDs – just put a blank disk in the drive and see what happens!
