Tsing Tao

I drank a Tsing Tao today, after what feels like years, though it couldn’t be much more than one. I miss Tsing Tao.

The SLUG regulars used to go to The House of Guang Zhao, a fairly mediocre Chinese restaurant near the university. It was average food, below average service, and despite my fondness for the beer, it really wasn’t all that great either. But the tables were round and close, the company was generally enjoyable, and we had many good times.

We now go to an Indian restaurant called Spice Boys. The staff are kind and welcoming, and the food is always good and plentiful. But the table is long, the company is different, I feel like I’m working the room instead of just enjoying myself… and we drink VB.

VB is the blue denim jeans of Australian beer. It does the job, goes with anything, and to me, insufferably average. I haven’t owned a pair of blue denim jeans for at least eight years. I am a wankeur. VB is only one rung up from Fosters, which we export overseas with a national conspiratorial wink. You can bet that VB will be our next “export quality” beer. It keeps the Poms and Yanks busy while we drink Coopers, the unofficial beer of linux.conf.au 2004.

But Tsing Tao is a beer flavoured with memories…
